I love those rare productions of The Magic Flute that let either Tamino or Papageno cry over Pamina's heartbreak in the short scene that follows "Ach, ich fühl's." Fortunately, we have a few filmed productions which fill that need.
For Tamino, there's the two productions directed by Göran Järvefelt: the 1986 staging from the Sydney Opera House and the 1989 staging from the Drottningholm Court Theatre. Both productions have Tamino – Gran Wilson in Sydney, Stefan Dahlberg at Drottningholm – collapse as soon as Pamina leaves, and lie on the floor sobbing uncontrollably as Papageno drunkenly tries to comfort him.
(The Ingmar Bergman film also has Tamino cover his face with his hands in anguish after Pamina's aria, although it's not clear if he's actually crying or not. His heavy breathing sounds as if he is, though.)
Then there's Jean-Pierre Ponnelle's 1982 Salzburg Festival production. Christian Boesch's Papageno delivers his boasting about having kept silent in front of Pamina – which in other performances seems clueless and unfeeling, which is probably why it's often cut – with a shaky, forced cheerfulness that fails to hide his sadness. Then he finally breaks down and sobs as he indulges in more wine and tries to get Tamino to join him in drinking.
It's hard to say which version I like better.
Papageno crying in this scene is obviously less "out of character," since he's always more vulnerable than Tamino, and it is touching to give such poignant moments to a comic character now and then. (It reminds me of Rizzo the Rat crying after "When Love Is Gone" in The Muppet Christmas Carol – except with more alcohol involved.) Besides, it's more in keeping with the warm rapport he shared with Pamina in Act I to have him be distraught by her pain rather than callous about it.
But if I had to choose, I think I slightly prefer seeing Tamino cry. In Act II he becomes such a stern, stoic paragon of courage and Masonic values, in contrast to the ardent, naïve, impetuous young man he was in Act I. In some performances, he almost loses his humanity and becomes hard to like anymore. It's gratifying to see his "manly and composed" veneer finally break, and be reminded that he does still have feelings, that he's truly distraught to be forced to let his beloved Pamina suffer, and that at heart, he's still a young boy trapped in a grueling, overwhelming situation.
I love both stagings, though, and I'm glad they both exist.

Thoughts on Christopher Walken’s Captain Hook?
Whooooooo boy…. 😬 There’s a reason I don’t talk much about Walken’s Hook on this blog and that reason is that he might very well be my least favorite version of Hook. (Leaving aside Peter and the Starcatchers’ Black Stache, but they just totally missed the point of Hook there with their disgusting, bawdy, dense caricature of a man. Black Stache is not, never has been, and never will be Hook. But I digress.) Anyway, I have several problems with Walken’s Hook, some of which I think can just be chalked up to poor casting choice and some of which where the blame falls entirely on Walken’s performance.
First off, Walken has a VERY distinctive New York accent, which…just doesn’t work for Hook. Hook is supposed to sound like a posh English professor from London, not Rizzo the con man from Midnight Cowboy. True, people fake accents all the time in Hollywood, but Walken is one of those people who is immediately recognizable by his particular sound, so I don’t know why they would have chosen him to play ANY English character.
Second, Walken is too old for the role. Yes, Hook is supposed to be an adult who seems old to Peter, but typically, he is cast as someone who is maybe 30-40-ish. Some people headcanon him being a little younger at around his 20s while others (myself included) place him around 50-something. And it’s also true that other older actors have played Hook in the past. Cyril Ritchard was around 62 at the time he played Hook in the 1960 filmed version of the stage play. But Walken was 71 at the time he played the Hook. That’s like…grandpa age. And at least Ritchard’s Hook seemed to still be having fun. Walken’s Hook is just…lifeless…
And that’s another issue in and of itself… I don’t know what the deal was that day, but Walken’s game was off. I can accept a physically older Hook if he does the role well, but Walken was just…not into it at all. He was so…flat and emotionless. He didn’t seem intimidating or sympathetic or funny or…anything, really. He didn’t even seem too worried about the crocodile…just…sort of mildly concerned. And he kept forgetting and stumbling over his lines…multiple times. It was pretty obvious at some points that the other pirates—most notably Smee (played by Christian Borle, who also ironically played Black Stache on stage…) had to keep not-so-subtly reminding him what came next. Maybe he wasn’t feeling well that day and was on some heavy medication. Maybe he had experienced some personal tragedy that was distracting him. Or maybe he just had too much to drink. Whatever it was, he came off as being half asleep or drunk the entire time, and it was extremely off-putting. By the time the crocodile showed up near the end, I was like, “C’mon and put the guy out of his misery already! Please get him off the stage.” I think that’s the only time I’ve ever WANTED the crocodile to get Hook. That’s how bad it was.
So yeah…. Not a fan…

girl i was so out of touch when i was a kid i remember going to like this outdoorsy activity park place as a part of my baptist summer camp i went to as a kid (no kid went there for jesus it was all about the lazer tag) and i remember like my cousin gojng to get soda and he asked me if i wanted anything and i said “could you get me a choclate soda”. Like i was from the sixties. like i was rizzo giving frenchie her order for the drug store. I blame this on the adventures odyssey audio book cds (another hallmark of my homeschool christian upbringing).

Interesting true story from my life... was arrested for something over a decade ago, won’t say what, but nobody died and acab on the tumbles-site, right? Was in holding and I begged for reading material to distract my mind because I was in panic-mode. Cop handed me two books, one was a Bible. Cop: “You might want to read this, start with the Gospel of John” or “Start with the New Testament” - something like that. Me: “Um... I’ve read the Bible, I’m a Christian.” Cop: “You sure aren’t acting like it.” I read parts of the other book, instead, a biography of Frank Rizzo, of all things. That was a lifetime ago and in my spiritual life, I am not sure what to call myself anymore. I am not an atheist and my brain still connects to some aspects of Christianity, but I’m not sure I should call myself Christian anymore. It was a lifetime ago when I was a little more connected, a little more sure, but definitely not enough to be what any church wanted me to be. I am just sharing the story because it is interesting the things people assume about each other. You’re sick of Christianity, so Christians think that that you didn’t know the “true” version or have a “real” relationship with Jesus. Someone encountered me in a bad time in my life and there’s the assumption that “Christians are always good people, they don’t have mental health episodes or do crimes - she needs Bible.” Um... nope. Sorry, officer, I broke your perceptions. Anyway, I do want to say sorry for having been the yellow person at earlier points in my life. I think I understand the purple-person a little more. I don’t think I can ever accept an invite back into any church - particularly any that believes in an eternal Hell, for instance. I think it is the most abusive idea that people have ever come up with. (And people can debate whether or not it is Biblical until the cows come home, I do not care). I am glad that I dropped it long ago. I recently lost a very dear loved one who was very much a non-believer and the result of this was me screaming at the ceiling to an imagined version of God that if he was like the evangelicals say he is and if Hell is real and my loved one went there for not ascribing to a laundry-list of beliefs, that I am going to kill Him with my own bare ghost-hands and cast him there when I stand before Him. Mind you, I am not an atheist. Agnostic, maybe, but yes - this threatening God is real for me. I am sorry for prior beliefs. I’m sorry for being the yellow person. I am not sure that I am fully the purple person, but I am trying to understand.
